New monograph by renowned oceanologist Nikolai Filatov recapitulates the results of his half-century work

The results of studies of water bodies on different continents - from America to Antarctica - were presented by Corr. Academician Nikolai Filatov at KarRC RAS Learned Council meeting. The scholar has contributed to the efforts to address the issue of preserving the resources of lakes Ladoga and Onego and reduction of the Caspian and Sevan levels, participated in designing the dam in the Gulf of Finland to protect St. Petersburg from floods, and in many other major tasks of great importance to people. Fifty years of research, more than 600 academic publications - all of that will be covered by Nikolai Filatov's new monograph.

Karelian scientists presented the results of studies on the carbon issue

On February 25-27 the reporting conference of the RITM Carbon Consortium took place in Moscow. Scientists discussed the results of the first phase of the Key Innovative Project of State Importance (VIP GZ) “Unified National System for Monitoring Climate Active Substances”. Employees of the Karelian Research Center RAS also participated in the event, presenting their findings from the study of carbon pools and fluxes in wetland, aquatic and forest ecosystems and agricultural landscapes of Karelia.

Women scientists at KarRC RAS receive government awards on the International Women’s Day eve

On March 6, the official ceremony of handing government awards to the best science, culture and art workers took place at the National Museum of Karelia. Scientists of the Karelian Research Center RAS Irma Mullonen and Natalya Kaznina were acknowledged by the decree of the Head of the region.

Economics are working on recommendations for tourism development in Arctic regions

Specialists of the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS have worked out an original methodology for studying domestic and inbound international tourism in the Russian Arctic. According to the results of the study, the most “touristy” Arctic regions are the Murmansk Region and the Republic of Karelia. The most challenging situation is in the Nenets Autonomous District and Yakutia. The new approach made it possible to assess the situation in ten northern regions and propose specific measures for them to develop tourism.
