On 23rd December2025, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences passed a resolution awarding the Sukachev Gold Medal to Doctor of Biological Sciences Alexander Kryshen. The medal is awarded for outstanding works in the ecology of biological systems. The document specifically noted the scientist's series of papers on the structure and dynamics of forest ecosystems.
Alexander Kryshen is Chief Researcher at the Laboratory of Boreal Forest Dynamics and Productivity, Forest Research Institute KarRC RAS. The scientist specializes in ecology, phytosociology, and sylvics. He is the author of 279 scientific papers, including 11 monographs. Alexander Kryshen is a member of the editorial boards of a number of specialized scientific journals, Deputy Chairman of the RAS Scientific Council on Forest, a RAS Expert, a member of the Expert Advisory Board on the Forest Sector under the Committee of the Federation Council.
The scientist’s major research results include the study of patterns in the formation of plant communities in cut-over sites and solutions for the problem of controlling undesirable vegetation in forest nurseries, research on the dynamics of forest recovery after disturbances, the history of forest fires and their connection to climate and human settlement history, the development of an ecological-dynamic model of forest vegetation on automorphic soils, which can provide leverage for forestry planning.
The Sukachev Gold Medal was established by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2025, on the 145th anniversary of birth of this Academician of the USSR AS, Merited Scientist of RSFSR. Vladimir Sukachev was a renowned silviculturist, ecologist, and science administrator.
We congratulate Alexander Mikhailovich on this supreme professional credit and wish him prosperity and new academic achievements!

Young geologist from Karelia awarded a medal from the Russian Academy of Sciences for research on geochronometer minerals
In July, the Russian Academy of Sciences announced the winners of the competition among scientific works by young scientists and students across 21 research fields. A RAS medal was awarded to Maria Sukhanova, doctoral student at the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS and Junior Researcher at the Institute of Precambrian Geology and Geochronology RAS. Maria engages in dating and determining the formation environments of geochronometer minerals, which help geologists to pinpoint the time and reconstruct the conditions under which rocks and ores formed. We congratulate Maria Sukhanova on this well-deserved award!
