Prospects of using mustard grown on zinc-enriched substrate studied by scientists at KarRC RAS

Soil contamination with metal ions is a pressing issue in agriculture. One of the options for environmentally safe removal of these chemical elements from contaminated soils is the phytoremediation technique, which involves planting species resistant to high concentrations of metals and capable of absorbing fairly large amounts of ions and accumulating them in above-ground parts. However, the plants to be used for soil purification should be selected with regard to the climatic conditions of the given region. Plant physiologists at the Karelian Research Center RAS have been searching for species suitable for phytoremediation of zinc-contaminated soils in northern regions, as well as for options for their subsequent processing. They evaluated the possibility of using two species of mustard for cleaning soils from zinc contamination.
