Ethnographers and mathematicians working on an online map of place names of Karelia

Karelian scientists are creating a toponymic web service TopKar. The system will contain full information on place names and enable searching for and displaying objects on the map. The project is implemented by specialists from the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History (ILLH) KarRC RAS and Institute of Applied Mathematical Research (IAMR) KarRC RAS. The TopKar database currently includes 1 377 place names with geographic coordinates and 52 thousand completed electronic place name forms. All in all, ILLH KarRC RAS card index contains 300 thousand place names. The database regularly gets augmented.

The future of the Ladoga Skerries national park discussed at KarRC RAS

Development of recreational activities in the Ladoga Skerries National Park was discussed at a seminar on December 16th. The participants of the event were Karelian scientists, CEOs of the national park, representatives of the Karelian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Information and Analytical Center for Protected Areas (Roszapovedtsentr), municipalities, and business project leaders.
