Regeneration of berry subshrubs in the periphery of cut-over sites studied by scientists from Karelia and Arkhangelsk Region

The study of changes in the vegetation of ecotones - zones of transition between cut-over sites and forest - is an emerging research area. A special microclimate is formed in such strips as they remain under some impact of the forest canopy. These habitats are favorable for typical forest plant species. Thus, bilberry and cowberry actively bear fruit in cut-over edge sites. Their fruits attract not only berry pickers, but also animals and birds. The regeneration of the subshrubs in the first post-logging years is studied by scientists from Karelia and the Arkhangelsk Region.

The income level of residents and the age of the settlement head influence the use of social media by local authorities

Digital inequality disadvantages many groups of people. This is especially evident when comparing the digitalization of large cities vs villages. However, this phenomenon has hardly if at all been studied at the level of individual districts and settlements. Specialists at the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS are working on ways to measure the digital divide at the municipal level by examining the extent to which social networks are used for communication between the authorities and citizens.

A study by scientists from KarRC RAS helping to analyze the traffic situation in Petrozavodsk

Mathematicians from the Karelian Research Centre RAS are working on the Petrozavodsk City traffic model. It will enable researchers and authorities to analyze how temporary street closures, new bypasses, tunnels and bridges will affect the traffic situation. Scientists study the road situation using game-theoretic mathematical methods, searching for optimal strategies for car drivers, transport operators and public transport passengers.
