Weather conditions potentially causing poor cranberry yield this year

Cold and dry beginning of the summer lowers the berry yield of cranberry. This conclusion is backed up by many years of monitoring by specialists from the Mire Ecosystems Laboratory of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS. The data on flowering in sample plots this season also indicate there will be less cranberry in Karelia as a whole than last year.

Over 20 hours of interviews in Karelian and Russian recorded by scientists during an expedition to the Muezersky District of Karelia

Staff of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS took an expedition to the Muezersky District, Republic of Karelia. Scientists collected linguistic and ethnographic materials, including more than 20 hours of interviews in Karelian and Russian. New samples of dialectal speech will supplement the audio map of the Open Veps and Karelian Corpus.

A study by hydrobiologists to prevent the development of dangerous anoxic zones in Lake Onego

The formation of anoxic zones deep in the lake is a dangerous phenomenon. It it fraught with secondary, largely uncontrollable, water pollution, which can cause a degradation of the reservoir, essentially turning it into a swamp. The emergence of such critical zones can be predicted by monitoring the spring development of phytoplankton and bacterial activity. To sample them, hydrobiologists from the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS undertook a ten-day expedition to Lake Onego.
