A presentation of the book “Invasive Plants and Animals in Karelia” was organized for biology teachers from Petrozavodsk schools. The presentation took place at the Karelian Research Centre RAS on September 21. Scientists told the audience about the DIAS project and alien species and shared their experience of collaborating with schools.

Six districts of Karelia – almost 40% of the Republic’s territory – have been included in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Three of them were included only two years ago and their integration in existing Russian Artic development projects is a topical issue. What constrains the development opportunities for the Karelian Arctic? What factors influence population loss? These and other problems were discussed during the KarRC RAS Learned Council meeting on September 15th. The keynote speaker was Junior Researcher from the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS Alexander Volkov.

Scientists to discuss the state of lakes and seas in the context of ongoing climate change and socio-economic development. This is the topic of the international conference held by the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS on September 12-14. Over a hundred experts from different regions of Russia and from CIS countries share their research results in a hybrid offline/online format.

The need to create an environmental monitoring system for Karelia and to work out a federal-level ad hoc program for conserving lakes Onego and Ladoga was declared by KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet in the St. Petersburg – Republic of Karelia Business Forum. RAS Corresponding Academician made a presentation during the round-table session on environmental protection.

New aspects of research on female corporeality in the Karelian culture were presented by Yulia Litvin, Researcher from the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS, in the Herald of Anthropology. Women’s daily life long remained an understudied topic: discussion of some aspects used to be a cultural and societal taboo, and this situation has influenced the research tradition.

On August 22-25 the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS is hosting SMARTY 2022 – the 3rd International Workshop on Stochastic Modeling and Applied Research of Technology.
