Scientists are creating a speech corpus of Baltic Finnic languages of Karelia. Unique audio material reflecting the state of Karelian and Veps dialects will become available in open access. A field trip to Medvezhyegorsky District took place in June as part of this project. It is one of the areas in Karelia where the Karelian-Proper supradialect has been best preserved.

Karelian Research Centre RAS has purchased a modern mass spectrometer ICP-MS Agilent 7900. With this device, researchers can analyze the trace element composition of rock species, minerals, ores, ground- and surface waters, soils, wood, biological and archaeological objects. Compared to previous-generation spectrometers, it has a higher output and a lower detection threshold. The Analytical Center of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS has completed the start-up work a few days ago.

Karelia is not only rich in surface water resources, but also has plentiful groundwater reserves. A talk on the problems, resources, and geochemical characteristics of groundwater in our region was given by Researcher at the Hydrochemistry and Hydrogeology Laboratory of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS Galina Borodulina at KarRC RAS Learned Council Meeting on June 23rd.

The work to create the Museum of Applied Environmental Research at KarRC RAS continues. On June 15th, the museum-to-be was visited by Petrozavodsk University students during their summer practical training. The students took a tour of the first exhibition sections and made proposals on the content to be added.

Paleovolcano Day took place in Girvas Village, Kondopoga District, on June 11th. It was co-organized by the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS and the Girvas Paleovolcano Park. Scientists told the locals and guests about the great eruptions and catastrophes that happened in the territory of contemporary Karelia two billion years ago.

Scientists from the Karelian Research Centre RAS will carry out integrated monitoring of the World Heritage Site “Petroglyphs of Lake Onega and the White Sea”. On June 8th, the research plan was discussed between KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet and Head of the Republic of Karelia Cultural Heritage Protection Administration Yulia Alipova.
