On June 9th at 15.30 the photo exhibition “Ruskeala: the Secret of the Depth” will be launched in the lobby of the KarRC RAS main building. Its author is Anton Yushko, cave photographer from St. Petersburg. The launch will be followed by the seminar “Mining heritage of Karelia: from deposit mining to tourism”, where the audience will learn more about mining history destinations in Karelia. The day will end with a tour of the Museum of Precambrian Geology of the KarRC RAS Institute of Geology. Everyone is welcome!

Media project No Weaker Science acknowledged as the Project of the Year at the contest organized by the Karelian Union of Journalists. The ten films constituting the project tell about the work of woman scientists, including researchers from the Karelian Research Centre RAS.

Karelian Research Centre’s Research Area Leader Nina Nemova elected an Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This status is bestowed on scholars who have produced results of supreme scientific significance. Nina Nemova is the first scientist from Karelia to become a RAS Academician. We cordially congratulate Nina Nemova on this top-level recognition!

Staff of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS study lipids and fatty acids in marine organisms, including commercial ones. Their research objects include Antarctic krill and deep pelagic fishes inhabiting in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. This year, Head of the Laboratory for Ecological Biochemistry Svetlana Murzina and PhD Student Viktor Voronin took part in a Russian expedition to Antarctic coastal waters on board the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh.

Researchers at the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS study corundums of the Arctic zone of Karelia. Ruby and sapphire are the best known varieties of this mineral. Corundum crystals are remarkable for their hardness and color palette. The studies of this mineral were introduced in more detail to KarRC RAS Learned Council meeting on May 26 by the Head of the Mineral Raw Materials Department of the Institute of Geology Vladimir Shchiptsov.
