Keywords: quaternary deposits, relief, geomorphology.
The main feature of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia (GBF) is its considerable length and occurrence in various structuralgeomorphological zones. These two factors are responsible for a variety of Quaternary rocks and landforms in the belt. The Quaternary cover structure is dominated by the glacial, fluvioglacial and lacustrineglacial deposits, produced by the last Scandinavian Late Valdai glaciation, that vary in thickness from 0 to 60 m and have an average thickness of 3–10 m. Younger, Holocene, swampy, lacustrine, alluvial and seismogravitational deposits occur locally. The formation of the various types of Quaternary deposits was dependent on sedimentation conditions and bedrock composition and relief. Considerable differences in relief structure have allowed us to identify four zones in the GBF: a northern elevated zone, the northern West Karelian Upland, the southern West Karelian Upland, and the northern Lake Ladoga area (Northern Priladozhye).
