This monograph presents a discussion of the history of introduction, acclimatization progress, peculiarities of ecology of new mammal species in the European North of Russia, their role in indigenous communities and human commercial activities, problems of the management and protection of their populations. Other topics considered are the re-establishment of aboriginal species in their historic ranges and other aspects of fauna resources recovery.
The monograph is based mainly on material collected by the author in 1957–2007 in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Leningrad, Novgorod and Pskov Provinces and Republic of Karelia. Some archival documents and records of the Western Branch of Zhitkov Russian Research Institute of Game Management and Fur Farming, local State Hunting Inspectorates (present State Departments of Game Management), local Unions of consumer's co-operation, hunters' associations (with permission of their heads) were also used.
The book will be a valuable textbook for students studying biology, agriculture, and forestry.
