KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet delivered a plenary talk at the 12th China-Russia Engineering and Technology Forum in the Chinese Harbin. The CEO presented our scientists’ developments in biotechnology, aquaculture, remote sensing, greenhouse gas monitoring, geology, and other fields, as well as announced the international environmental conference on the BRICS regional-level cooperation to take place in Petrozavodsk next year.

Scientists of KarRC RAS tested a new underwater acoustic system in freshwater bodies

A new underwater acoustic system was tested out in the field by specialists of the Laboratory of Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates Ecology, Institute of Biology KarRC RAS, during an expedition to Lake Syamozero in the summer 2025. The device was used to estimate the fish stocks, to determine the fish species composition, and to map the lake’s depths.

Karelian scientists presented their findings of rare fungal and lichen species at a conference in Minsk

Employees of the Forest Research Institute KarRC RAS returned from the 12th International Conference “Problems of Forest Phytopathology and Mycology”, Minsk, 13–17 October. This year, the conference was dedicated to the centennial anniversaries of birth of two professors – prominent Belarusian phytopathologist Nikolai Fyodorov and Karelian sylviculturist Vladimir Shubin – a nationally and internationally recognized specialist in reforestation and forest mycology.

Karelian scientists comment on the discoveries winning the Nobel Prize 2025

This week, final announcements of the 2025 Nobel Prize laureates were made. The entire scientific community and the world in general followed the news from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Specialists at the Karelian Research Centre RAS commented on the prize awards and the implications of the winning work in their own and related fields (in physiology and medicine; physics; and economic sciences), and talked about the research conducted in these areas at KarRC RAS.

Zoologists and ichthyoparasitologists are back from the first Paanajarvi expedition within a large-scope study of the park’s arctic environment

Staff of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS returned from the first expedition to the Paanajarvi National Park within a new project for integrated study of arctic natural features. Specialists in fish parasitology assessed the species composition and abundance of the Olanga River fishes, first of all grayling and brown trout, and their parasites, while zoologists examined the natural systems where winter track counts and key summertime activities would be carried out.

Karelian economist’s scholarly work is used to develop innovation systems in Arctic regions

Economist Sergey Tishkov is among winners of the international competition of scientific, R&D, and innovative advances in the development and use of the Arctic and the continental shelf. The laureates were celebrated in St. Petersburg during the RAO/CIS Offshore 2025 Forum. The researcher has come up with a theory and methodology for forming innovation systems for Arctic regions. His outputs are already applied in districts of Karelia and have been recommended by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture for inclusion in the national program “Development of the Russian fish industry sector”.

KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet took part in a hybrid online/offline meeting of the RAS Regional Policy Council held last Friday in Yakutsk. The discussion focused on interactions between academics and authorities regarding Arctic studies, which is one of the priority areas for the Karelian Research Centre.

Scientists suggest creating a geopark network incorporating all of Karelia’s geological attractions

The Institute of Geology KarRC RAS has developed a project to create a network of geoparks in Karelia. Scientists are convinced that the republic's geological attractions are a "new mineral resource," and a renewable one: they can serve the tourism, recreation, education, and economic purposes. The prospects for creating such a network were presented by Sergey Svetov, Director of the Institute of Geology, at the closing of the "Stone Chronicle of Karelia" project, within which scientists familiarized with the republic's residents with the geological past and present of our region.

Scientists ready to deliver their new developments to the agricultural industry

In addition to basic science, researchers at the Karelian Research Centre RAS deal with practical issues, primarily those of concern for Karelia. The range of studies in agriculture is expanding. A couple of days ago, KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet familiarized Prime Minister of the Republic of Karelia Government Andrey Sergeev with new developments in potato production, regionalization of berry crops, and cultivation of medicinal plants.

Institute of Geology KarRC RAS willing to act as a platform for comprehensive dialog between science, business, authorities

Employees of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS took part in the 4th International Stone Processing Forum Karelforum-2025. The scientists acted as experts in professional discussions. A take-away from the discussions is that it is necessary to develop cooperation between the mining industry of the republic and the scientific community for a proficient assessment of promising sites and objects and qualified expert review reserves.

KarRC RAS Learned Council resumes work after the summer break

KarRC RAS Learned Council held its first meeting after the summer break. Scientists heard and discussed issues of relevance to the Centre. The scientific agenda was about the results of studies in hydrophysics and geology, and the administrative agenda was about the CEO change at the Forest Research Institute and "Transactions of KarRC RAS" getting a level-1 listing on the White List of scientific journals. The meeting also featured a ceremony for handing in diplomas to doctoral school graduates.

Scientists at KarRC RAS develop instruments for science and industry

Staff of the Laboratory for Ecological Monitoring and Modeling at DMR KarRC RAS are developing instrumentation for their own research and for broad application in various industrial sectors. Their inventions include, in particular, granule and droplet size analyzers and a CO2 flux meter. On September 18-19, scientists took part in the All-Russian Forum Karelia 2025, where they explored tools for promoting their developments.

Republic of Karelia Branch of the Russian Geographical Society celebrates 80th anniversary

On September 25, 1945, the Presidium of the All-Union Geographical Society resolved to set up its branch in Karelia. Since then, the regional RGS Branch, guided by scientific principles and the goals of geographical education, has implemented hundreds of projects in the republic. Throughout its history, the Branch has closely cooperated with the Karelian Research Centre RAS.

Scientists invite nature lovers to take part in bird population monitoring

Ornithologists at KarRC RAS are recruiting volunteers to participate in monitoring bird populations in Karelia and the Leningrad Region. Avian populations, including those of rare species, are undergoing change. To track its scope and understand its causes, it is necessary to regularly conduct bird counts at the same locations and using the same methodology. The denser the transect network, the more effective the observations. Nature enthusiasts can lend a helping hand to scientists and contribute to this large-scale research.
