Dr. of Biological Sciences, RAS Corresponding Academician Olga Bakhmet informed specifically about the fact that Karelian Research Center RAS together with the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus have initiated a number of programs and projects combined into a cooperation roadmap for 2023-2025. One of the priorities is the project " Innovation in breeding and feeding of valuable fish species".
– The project could potentially focus on developing and substantiating regionally customized ways to improve the practices of rearing and feeding commercially important salmonid fishes and sturgeons in two pilot regions - Republic of Karelia and Belarusian Polesie. Cooperation with Belarusian scientists is extremely important today, including joint research and innovation projects, - Olga Bakhmet explained.
As Senator Igor Zubarev pointed out, since the introduction of sanctions, fish farmers have been experiencing a shortage of specialized imported fodders. At the same time, there are some unresolved issues related to the technology of fodder production and fish breeding in Russia. The parliamentarian is therefore convinced that science needs to help in this matter.
– I think it is necessary to stress that the results of scientific research are important for the region's development in practice. The Public Council under the Federal Agency for Fishery has already supported the project submitted by scientists from Karelia and Belarus. We will continue to work with the Agency, - said the senator.
Another issue discussed at the meeting was the stocking of the republic's northern rivers with the produce of hatcheries that artificially reproduce valuable salmonid fish species.
– The regional government believes that a significant reduction in the release of juvenile fish will affect the populations. Indeed, it would be difficult to preserve red fish in northern rivers without stocking. We will discuss this issue at a meeting in the Federal Agency for Fishery, - the senator summed up.
Olga Bakhmet, in turn, stressed that aquaculture matters should be addressed taking into account the environmental agenda. Karelian scientists are currently conducting research to work out new technologies designed to both promote the development of the industry and reduce the risks for natural ecosystems.

Scientists pin down a first finding of wolf-dog hybrids in the wild in Karelia
Genetic study of wolves taken down by hunters in Karelia shows hybrids from crossing between wild animals and dogs are appearing in the population. Scientists believe this may be driven by the hunting pressure – a survival strategy for the species. On the other hand, hybridization and inbreeding – crossings between close relatives – jeopardize the population in general. Meanwhile, wolves play a pivotal ecological role.
