For two days, KarRC RAS will serve as a platform for discussing possibilities for joint regional-level projects in the field of science and tourism. The topics for the conference are global and regional climate change, sustainable nature management, environmental security, contributions of countries to promoting green tourism.
The conference started with a plenary sessions: the audience was welcomed by KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet, Ambassador-at-Large at the Russian Foreign Ministry Pavel Knyazev, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Vladimir Chizhov, and Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov.

The conference program includes two thematic sessions: "Climate Change, Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Environmental Safety in BRICS Countries: Region-specific Features" and "Environmental Education and Tourism in BRICS Countries". On the Russian side, researchers from almost all federal districts of the country will deliver their presentations.
For the Karelian Research Center RAS, cooperation with BRICS is a promising and productive avenue. Scientists at KarRC RAS are already actively collaborating with colleagues from Brazil, China, and India, and there are also some joint activities with scientists from South Africa. The multidisciplinary approach of Karelian scientists can provide a basis for utilizing the scientific potential of KarRC RAS in the interests of the Republic, Russia, and other BRICS countries.

The International conference “Regional cooperation within BRICS: sustainable nature management – environment, education, tourism” started working at KarRC RAS. This forum is designed to promote cooperation at the regional level in this interstate alliance. The conference participants are scientists, representatives of authorities, and experts from BRICS counties.

An important phase of the KarRC RAS Director General election procedure completed
The Electoral Commission has summarized the results of the voting for the election of the Director General of KarRC RAS. The turnout exceeded 80% of the Center's employees. The majority of votes, 391, were cast for Alexander Kryshen, Director of the Forest Research Institute. Acting Director General Olga Bakhmet was supported by 252 voters, and Deputy Director General Yuri Zaika received 17 votes. The Electoral Commission documented these results in its report, which will be submitted to the HR Policy Department of the Federal Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The candidacies will now undergo the procedure of approval by federal agencies, after which the employment contract will be signed with the winner of the competition.

Posseidon research vessel is back from this season’s first integrated expedition
Employees of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS completed an expedition around Lake Onego on board the Posseidon research vessel. The expedition covered 19 sites in bays, Central Onego, and Kizhi Skerries region. Scientists have sampled water for chemical and biological analyses.

Scientists from KarRC RAS among winners of the Russian Geographical Society’s Grant Competition 2025
The results of the Russian Geographical Society’s Grant Competition 2025 have been announced. Among the winners are Nikolai Filatov, Corr. Academician, Chief Researcher of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS, and Anastasiia Lyzlova, Senior Researcher of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS. The objectives of their projects are to popularize the legacy of the outstanding geographer and statistician Konstantin Arseniev, and to spot North Russian folk tales in the RGS Scientific Archives.
