Role of science in regional development discussed at RAS Regional Policy Council meeting

RAS Council on Regional Policy had a session in Moscow. The participants discussed issues related to the opening and operation of RAS regional offices, the activities of national academies and science towns. KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet took part in the talks.

KarRC RAS staff trained to operate UAVs

Scientists from the Karelian Research Center RAS mastered the methods of operating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at the Geoscan Group's training ground in the Leningrad Region. Previously, the equipment for aerial surveys based on the Geoscan 401 vertical takeoff and landing system was purchased for the Karelian Research Center RAS within the framework of the Science and Universities national project with additional grant funding, e.g. from the Russian Science Foundation. The UAV system will be used for vegetation mapping, to identify landscape features and to conduct long-term remote monitoring of northern ecosystems in Karelia and the Murmansk Region, including their protected areas.

Changes in the seasonal activity of ticks may be related to climate warming

The taiga tick has become more abundant in the north of its range, and the onset of its activity now happens earlier. Such are the conclusions scientists from the Karelian Research Center RAS have come to after years of monitoring. Changes in the seasonal dynamics of this arachnid species may be related to climate warming.

The three-century-long history of lake research and studies of the most ancient rocks recounted at KarRC RAS Learned Council session

On April 23, KarRC RAS Learned Council met on a session dedicated to the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Nikolay Filatov, Chief Researcher at the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS, told about the achievements of the Academy of Sciences in the study of lakes. Director of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS Sergey Svetov made a presentation on the studies by Franz Levinson-Lessing, founder of the Russian school of petrology, and on the results of modern research into the geology of Karelia.

Laboratory for Integrated Study of the Arctic to be created at KarRC RAS

Laboratory for Arctic studies is being set up within the Department for Multidisciplinary Research KarRC RAS. Its priority research area will be the issues of environmental safety in the Arctic zone. The laboratory will be created under the Science and Universities National Project.
