On September 15–17, the Karelian Research Centre RAS will host the 3rd International Conference "Regional-Level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues". The forum will bring together experts from various regions of Russia, India, South Africa, Ethiopia, Brazil, Belarus, China, and other countries, to participate both offline and online in several sessions. The forum will discuss questions of aquatic and forest ecosystem ecology, geological and soil science perspectives of sustainable use of natural resources, and challenges of the green economy – where efficient use of resources is supposed to be combined with minimizing adverse environmental impacts.

The key themes of the event include global and regional environmental challenges on the interdisciplinary research radar, experience of cooperation in addressing sustainable natural resource management within BRICS and CIS, and interactions of science, business, and authorities in tackling global issues of sustainable territorial development.

The first conference dedicated to BRICS regional cooperation was held at the KarRC RAS in 2023. Two years later, its geographic scope has been expanded significantly following the accession of Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Ethiopia into the interstate alliance. This fall, the conference is expected to gather over 100 participants, including around 80 authors contributing papers.

– Initiating the first conference in 2023, we aspired to create a platform for networking among BRICS scientists on environmental issues. Topics such as climate change effects, the carbon agenda, green economy, and many others affect all countries, and the most effective solutions can be found only through concerted efforts. Four years on, we can safely say we are moving in the right direction: the idea of network cooperation has proven to be in demand. In between our conferences, colleagues stay in touch online through seminars and workshops, meet in person in different countries, and come up with joint research projects, – shared KarRC RAS CEO Olga Bakhmet.

The 3rd international conference “Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues” will be the central event of the international scientific forum “Science Beyond Borders: Advances in Interdisciplinary Academic Cooperation”, devoted to the 80th anniversary of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It will include events of both applied-science and popular-science nature. The detailed program of the conference and of the forum at large will be published shortly on the KarRC RAS website.

The conference is organized by the Karelian Research Centre RAS in collaboration with the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research under the cooperation agreement between the organizations.
