The mission of the Forum is to provide interdisciplinary platforms for discussing the theoretical and applied aspects of territorial development in the global space. The jubilee events at the KarRC RAS will include thematic research-to-practice conferences, exhibitions, seminars, a round table – all dedicated to research topics of high relevance for Russia and the world.
Since its founding, interdisciplinarity has been a distinctive strength of the Karelian Research Centre RAS. The research units of the humanities and natural sciences profiles at our Centre actively collaborate and complement each other, multiplying the versatility and performance of the research. In this anniversary year, it was decided to spotlight this trait by bringing together experts from various fields of science within the framework of the International Academic Forum, – noted KarRC RAS CEO, RAS Corresponding Fellow Olga Bakhmet.
On 14th Sept. 2026, participants of the All-Russian Research-to-Practice Conference (with international participation) "The Conservation and Scientific Value of Protected Areas: Implications for Sustainable Nature Management and National Ecological Well-being" will discuss the promising lines of PA research, application of novel and traditional methods for the study and conservation of typical and unique natural ecosystems, prospects for collaboration between research teams and PAs in implementing Russia’s National Projects, and other matters of importance.
On 14-18 Sept., the 5th International Workshop on Stochastic Modeling and Applied Research of Technology: SMARTY 2026, initiated and held biennially by the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS, will convene. It gathers scientists from different countries, who deal with theoretical, algorithmic and methodological aspects of the queuing theory and applied probability theory.
Sept. 15-17 are the days of the 3rd International Conference "Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues". Experts from various regions of Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Brazil, and other countries will meet in Petrozavodsk to discuss the state of aquatic and forest ecosystems, sustainable nature management in the fields of geology and soils, as well as issues of the green economy. The first conference dedicated to BRICS regional cooperation was held at the KarRC RAS in 2023. The next time the conference met, its geography was expanded significantly due to the accession of Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Ethiopia to the intergovernmental alliance. In the fall of 2026, the conference will gather more than 200 participants, with 80 authors to speak to the audience. One of the topics to be discussed by experts will be the National Project Bioeconomy. This is a potential point of consolidation for research efforts, including the work of institutes within the KarRC, which can be of interest for the microbiological industry and biotechnology sector, pave the way for designing solutions for the development of organic products for high-yield agriculture and human health, which is particularly relevant in the North.
A round table titled "On the Outstanding Contribution of I.V. Gorynin to the Development of Domestic and World Science, Including the Creation of Unique Building Materials and Technologies for the Arctic" is scheduled for September 16, 2026. It will bring together scientists, officials, businesses, and institutions supporting business and enterprises. The event is organized in pursuance of the Russian Presidential Decree "On Perpetuating the Memory of I.V. Gorynin and Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of His Birth" in the Republic of Karelia.
On 17-18 Sept. 2026, the 21st All-Russian Conference «The Bubrikh Readings: Interdisciplinary Research in the Humanities in Northwestern Russia» will be held. The Bubrikh Readings is one of Russia's largest forums for specialists in Finno-Ugric studies. Experts from various scientific and educational organizations across the country gather in Petrozavodsk every two years to discuss questions of Finno-Ugric linguistics, folklore studies, literature studies, history, and contemporary ethnosocial processes. This year, the conference will specifically focus on new formats, methods, and results of interdisciplinary collaboration in the study of the languages, cultures, and history of the peoples of Northwestern Russia.
Bringing together Russian and foreign scholars at the same venue, the International Academic Forum at the KarRC will provide an opportunity to present collaboration results, discuss and consolidate plans for further cooperation in the most topical areas of world-class scientific research, which respond to modern challenges and align with the strategic goals of Russia's national security.
