Ancient rocks of Karelia can help gain new knowledge of the earliest stages in the Earth’s evolution

Scientists from Primorsky Krai and Karelia are studying ancient rocks of the Kostomuksha iron ore deposit. A unique installation created in Vladivostok enables multi-isotope analysis of sulfur contained in the rocks. The resultant data can reveal the environment in which our planet was forming in the early period of its history and clarify the conditions in which the first organisms lived 2.7 billion years ago.
