International symposium on the study of mires of Northern Eurasia started in Petrozavodsk
International symposium “Mires of North Eurasia: biospheric functions, diversity and management” started at the Karelian Research Centre RAS. Scientists from Karelia, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Komi, regions of Siberia, the Urals and the Far East, as well as from Belarus to discuss the diversity and functioning of mire ecosystems, the scientific foundations of their restoration, mire management, and modern research methods.

Ichthyologists assessed the outcomes of vendace introduction to Lake Vashozero, Kondopoga District
Specialists from the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS studied the state of hydrobiological communities, including the fish fauna, in Lake Vashezero in the Kondopoga District of Karelia. The commercial vendace species was artificially introduced into the lake, along with whitefish, in the 1930s. The outcomes of such an introduction can be assessed objectively only decades later. The conclusion of the scientists is that, unlike other species, the Onego vendance became successfully established and naturalized in Vashozero.

Experts in soil science gather at KarRC RAS to discuss topical issues
Over a hundred specialists from around Russia as well as from Belarus and Uzbekistan participate in the conference «Topical Issues of the Theory and Practice of Forest Soil Science» taking place at KarRC RAS on September 18–22. Experts discuss the role of soils in climate regulation, problems of anthropogenic transformation of forest soils, topics of land resources and soil assessment, their importance in the system of sustainable forest management and other issues.
